If it looks like an oil pressure sender and has 2 prongs on it, it's a polution control device that was used to retard the timing back in the old days.

ah ok. can i remove it and install a temp sending unit in its place ?

Will a temp sending unit work there?

Not a good place for temp sender. There is only oil there in 3rd gear anyway. Put it in the oil pan.

how about in a line, I hate to mess up my new chrome pan.

if it is leaking like they all do,you can just pull it out and put a pipe plug of the same size in it,it is to retard the timing at highway speeds,at every transmission shop i have worked at thats what they did,hope this helps
