Why the 86-93 8.8" in the G-body?

From all the links from this site, all the threads, and other sources people talk about running the 8.8" axles from 86-93 Mustangs. BUT The Mustang rearend is only 57" wide! On cars that crowd the rim/tire towards the frame why run a rearend locating the rim 1/2" closer to the frame?

The resources I've found list the G-body rearends @ 58"

The 94-98 Mustang rearends are listed as 58.5" wide. Wouldn't it be better to have an additional 1/4" of space away from the frame?

If you could find a 66-77 Ford Bronco rearend 9" it lists at 58" wide the same as the G-body.

Any info on the Mustang rearends from the 94-98? Or did the factory make them weaker? JD

P.S. Now I'm more confused as I found two new websites that say the 86-93 Mustang 8.8" are 58.75"! Gees which is it 57" or 58.75"?
Also, I found more info on the 94-98 and they range between 60.5-61.5" wth
