Yeah I have 2 pull a parts........1 south in Birmingham, AL at 94 miles and 1 north of me in Nashville, TN at 87 miles........

The black wire on the alt. is for a tach lead for diesels only, the brown wire is for a 12V IGN hot only lead (connect to existing brown from the cars harness) and the other can be tied to your existing 10-gauge red charge lead. The green wires you see and the others most likely were for the TPS sensor and idle mixture control solenoid since that 307 would have had a feedback style Q-Jet carb.

Be sure to have a good connection through the "charge" lamp in the cluster, if not the alternator won't work... the other option is a ~10 ohm resistor, but make sure it's a high wattage ceramic one.

Doober where do I get one of those high wattage ceramic resistors? Other than the junkyard?

I found a couple at Radio Shack, but the current/wattage that flows through the resistor is close to/over its limit at 10 ohms. You would be better finding at least a 20w resistor. I use Google for searches like this sometimes, but you may try MCM or PartsExpress. At 14.4v a 10 ohm resistor actually dissipates about 20 watts, so I'd go with at least a 25w resistor just to be safe.

I wouldn't go buy a big resistor. Just install a light bulb. It will serve as an idiot light, and also limit the current.

For sure. That's how it's set up from the factory, but the factory diagram also shows the resistor. If you can't get it to work with the bulb (poor connection or otherwise), the resistor would be the next easiest step imo.

Okay so what type of light bulb and do I put it under the hood or behind the dash panel?

You have a large variety to chose from. An ordinary 194 bulb will work fine. You could go to an electronics type store (such as Radio Shack), and buy a 12V lamp already mounted in an enclosure. Just connect one side to switched +12V (ignition), and the other to the L terminal on the alternator. It will act just like an idiot light for the alternator. Autozone or similar type stores may also have a self contained 12V bulb.

As far as mounting, if you have a guage panel, just drill a hole for the lamp and you're all set.

The current rating is not that important. The Delco Remy manual says to test the alternator, any resistor value between 35 ohms (5 watt) and 500 ohms (1/2 watt) will work OK.

Hey I wanted to thank all you guys in this thread my car cranked today on the first try after I realizeed I didnt have the distributer was plugged in......then it cranked on the first try......oil pressure at cranking 35 psi then when it lit it went to 50 psi.....havent set the timing yet but I was wondering was the pressure suppose to be higher......tomorrow morning I will put on a new fuel filter & add good gas then pull the front rotors to be turned so I bleed the brakes and drive......again guys thanks for all your help....... \/ dancin_banana.gif
