I was looking at getting a 01 LQ4 w/100k on it, no accessories w/intake and coil packs for $1000. The guy at the yard said he has a 04 LQ9 with 82k with all accessories, harness, starter, CP's, and PCM for $1650. This will be going in a 64 malibu.

Do you think its worth the extra cash for the 04? I plan on doing a carb setup with no AC. I'm new to this LS stuff, just trying to sort through it alll.

Thats a tough one and heres why:

I am PRETTY sure those motors are mostly identical internally, but dont quote me on that. The '04 will most likely be drive by wire and the 01 will be cable. If you are ok dealing with the drive by wire, then yes its definitely a better deal in the end.

Id hold out for a pre '03 6.0 LQ4 or LQ9 since it will be cable driven.

BTW, around here at least...I found an 86k LQ4 with everything for $1200. You will pay a premium for the LQ9 and not be getting a whole lot more really.

I have an 03 LQ9, yes, more power, and yes more torque, basically because of compression, different pistons. heads are the same and I believe intake is as well. Those aren't high mileage engines, but I would say to look around more, those aren't really great deals. Mine was a 38k out of an 03 escalade for 1200 bucks with transmission and wiring harness. I know the guys at BRP (site sponsor) can help you locate one for less than 2k. Good luck in the swap!
