I have a sbc 350, mild cam with a turbo 350 (shift kit) and i believe a stock 1980 malibu v6 2.73 read end. Would I notice a huge difference in acceleration from switching 273 to 373 gears? money is not an issue. I was also wondering how much mpg i might lose. Im getting 12.5 highway right now. thanks, kyle

it'll be like getting kicked in the chest...yes you will notice a big difference..and yes your fuel mileage will suffer...to help figure out your cruising rpm we will need to know tire size...cruising speed and RPM at that speed...
I have a th400 with 235/60/15's on my wagon and I cruise at 60mph spinning 3000 RPM..just to give you a reference

You can compensate by swapng out the Turbo 350 for a 700R4, which would give you the O/D gear. I run 3:73's in my car and with the 700R4 I'm turning 2100 rpm @ 65-70 mph. I do run a 275/60/15, so with a taller tire, it does lower the overall engine speed. All while maintaining 17 mpg (roughly....)

That is if you want to swap out the trans....:)

X2 to all of the above. You'll think you've doubled your horsepower!

Depending on your type of driving, your milage may not change drastically. If it's a all highway 50 mile commute to work daily on the interstate well, yes, big drop in mpg. If you drive 10 miles on back roads with top speeds in the 55 mph range, your biggest expense will be in rear tires! lol. Rob.

I have a turbo 350 with the over drive gears installed as well as slap shift gears. I think I'm going to be running a 265/40/17 in the front and 275/45/17 in the rear. Would I be able to cruise at 65 with 373 gears in without too much rpm? Also does anyone know if those tires would fit? I have factory suspension . Thanks for the help, Kyle

too much RPM is a personal choice. What is too much RPM to some is NOT to another. SO where do you want your RPM to be?

WHAT do you want your car to do? What are you doing with the car? cruising burn outs A-B commute...???

usually a couple ratios steeper will show quite a bit of noticeable torque increase and if you have a increase in camshaft MIGHT even give you better gas mileage...Yes better- Because that cam is actually running in the correct range rpm it should be running in.

Good luck with the project. Jim

Its not an everyday driver, more like a cruiser, but when i want to lay into it, id like to actually get into it. my motor isnt a race motor, and its not even close to being built like one, i just dont want to run the dog piss out of it when cruising on the freeway.

from the sounds of what you want, i'd go 3.42s, kind of the best of both worlds, BIG difference on accel, but wont completely kill the highway manners.
