remember 1/2 ton pick-ups changed to 30 spline in 1990...

28 was too small for trucks even zr2 s-10 8.5 went to 30 spline axles also ...add for that small truck the rear will never fail. Well only if you run it dry of oil...lol.

I agree 28 spline Moser axles I can get you for about 235.00 a pair

also have posi unit 28 spline 2 series that can have a thick gear installed to it which again I have . posi is 189.00 gear 3.42 3.73 4.10 thick are 169.00 NEW

ORrrr why not just bite the bullet and get this MOSER 12 bolt rear...??? lol

2300.00 done 2500.00 with all new brake complete... I guarantee NO troubles here. I set-up the guts and assemble them. I do not trust anyone to set-up the gears and posi better....

This has turned into some good info for me as well

Been tossing around the idea of a posi for the summer, but I'm not really ready to spend the $ on new axles yet (if I got axles I'd go with 28-spline, not really planning on any slick-mounted blasts at the strip). I've been looking at stock 26-spline units on eBay lately, but haven't found anything that entices me yet (2-series btw). I don't know a lot about the different GM units, but I was hoping to find one of the rebuildable ones & do everything myself before summer hit.

Rebuildable 7.5.... PRetty much eaton is your only rebuildable unit...Clutch type. Your not gonna find too many on ebay laying around. All factory units were Auburn and the newer Torsen Gleasen units (28 spline) The Governor Lock eatons were found in small trucks like s-10 and really NOT designed for low end hole shots. This unit was designed to get a truck or car out of a everyday situation like mud, slippery road, snow and ice stability.... NOT burn outs or drag racing...lol.

If your going to buy aftermarket you might as well get the 28 spline axles...They cost the same as the 26 spline...that is a NO brainer also.

We do recondition the Auburn units ...but this proceedure can only be performed once in a cone type units life then after that it will be JUNK. They should last a good long life in a normal situation but remember performance posi units are wearing in every turn made with the car or truck . If you went straight the whole time you own youre car the posi would NEVER WEAR....lol

We recondition unit here as long as the spider gears are in decent condition and the cones are not shattered or too far gone. One of those things that takes some inspection before we can give you a price in full. usually 50-100 depending on the labor. Jim

I also have my '78 sitting out, have yet to check the rear to see what it has... do you know what the G-Bodies had (I guess a better question would be which vehicles had the stronger/better posi)? There are several at the junkyards around here, I was thinking about running out & pulling covers to see if any had posi (after it warmed up... wind chill is -20ºF right now ) if my '78 doesn't have it.

Came across this one on eBay, says it's an Auburn... is it rebuildable?

I'm also trying to get something straight about the 3- and 2-series carriers... a 2-series can be used with a 3-series gear with a spacer, but not the other way around, correct?

All cars received performance posi units and in the 1978-1987 g-body 7.5 they were ALL auburn units cone type.

I think the Monte carlos had the one piece auburn bodied unit like a barrel with a metal cap on the end in 1985, 1986 1987 ss montes 7 5/8 ring and pinion.

All the older G-body 7.5 received the split case bolt together carrier housing auburn cone type.

2 and 3 series info-
- 2 series open or posi unit can hold 2.14 - 3.08 stock gears and 3.23 -4.56 with thick gears made esspecial by aftermarket companies OR you can use stock 3.23 -4.56 3 series GM gears and a ring gear spacer.
-3 series open or posi unit can ONLY hold 3.23 -4.56 GM or aftermarket gears.

So you actually have more options using a 2 series carrier then with a 3 series unit.

You have pictured a aftermarket Auburn posi unit (limited slip unit)
