i am really curious if the 8.2 housing's are the same as the 8.5's,i was told they are the same housing wise.if that is true can i use an 8.5 carrier and gear set up in a 8.2 case?
i assume the carrier and pinion bearing are a different i.d and the yoke is 30 spline but
other wise will they interchange?

AFAIK, they're completely different.

Totally different. Only thing usable from a 8.2 to a 8.5 is the rear cover. Same bolt pattern . So that info is totally off you got. The 8.5 carrier is wider than the 8.2 carrier also meaning you may run out of case for the backlash and also the 8.2 ring gear uses 3/8 size bolt and the 8.5 uses 7/16 bolts so that does not work either even if you could get the unit in the housing. NO go.

Sorry for the bad news. Jim

Just post a rear cover picture...I can tell you from that. If it is a c-clip rear from a 1965-1972 chevelle it is DEFINETELY NOT 8.5

1971 1972 skylark and cutlas had the only 8.5 rears in the 1965-1972 muscle era. skylarks cover LOOKs like a 8.2 scaslloped cover and the Olds rear cover looks like a chevy cover but half the driver side oil bend in the cover is missing. Also the 8.5 skylark and most ALL 8.5 rear have the 5 and 7 o'clock triangular casting pointing outward from the casting. The 1971 1972 olds DOES NOT making them very stelth like in the junk yards. The yokes are different also using the inside u-joint clips for yoke retention and straps. If your not familiar with them Then it will be a tough catch. The more you look and train yourself the easier it will be to tell. Jim

there's no cover on this. it's bare....no axles, no carrier, nothing but the housing. are there any stamping numbers that would help determine what this is?
