The easiest way to measure backspace is to lay the wheel face down onto the ground so the
backside of the wheel is facing up. Take a straight edge and lay it diagonally across the inboard
flange of the wheel. Take a tape measure and measure the distance from where the straight edge
contacts the inboard flange to the hub mounting pad of the wheel.

I knew how to measure it on the wheel ;) I just don't have a wheel to measure
So I was wondering if I could measure it on the car itself?

Summitracing.com has a wheel/tire simulator that bolts up to the hub and figures out the largest wheel/tire combo possible, or if there would be any clearance issues with whatever you want to use. It's pricy (80 bucks?), but it sure would save some time. I'm getting one because my combo's pretty unique...
