blue smoke

i have a blue smoke coming out from my exhaust from time to time on initial start up.do you think i could add some lucas oil to it or change valve guides?

More than likely it's the valve stem seals. It only smokes on cold starts? A new set of seals will usually stop the smoking providing the guides aren't totally trashed.

how hard are they to replace? do i have to take the head off?

NO. You will need to put some air in the cylinders from a air compressor to hold the valves up while you change the seal.

You need a valve spring compressor, and they sell a fitting to screw into the spark plug hole. You screw the fitting in and attach an air hose to it to hold the valve from falling into the cylinder. Then compress the valve spring and remove the keepers, lift the spring and retainer off and replace the seal. Reverse the process to assemble. Do both valves in that cylinder then remove the fitting and go to the next cylinder. You'll also need to know how to adjust the valves when you are finished, as you will be removing the rocker arms to get to the valve springs. None of it is difficult, just take your time. Lee
