I'd pull the gauge cluster and see if you have power at the connector, if so printed circuit may be burned or ??? do you still have lights at the A/C heater controls? If you do I'd say printed circuit. Aren't electrical gremlins fun?!
I'd check to see that the light switch on the dash is working right. maybe that happend to burn out, or not ground or maybe got unplugged, jsut another thing to check while you drink your beers. Good luck!

Are we talking about the instrument panel lights? If so I had the same problem last week. I replaced the fuse 5 amp fuse for the instrument panel, and it did not fix the problem. The next thing I changed was the headlight switch. In my case it called for 2 different switches (7 prong and 8 prong unit). I changed this and replaced the 5 amp fuse again and the problem was solved.
