I'm strongly thinking of beginning my own carb'd ls project. Can someone with more gen III knowledge and experience give me an opinion/input on the following parts that I can pick up locally for a good price (I think anyway). I want to pick up this weekend if this is a good starting point, so let the opinions fly! The seller is telling me 10.8cr, is that gonna work with 93 octane? Also, telling me high 4xx hp, can any confirm that? I can get it for considerably less than what he mentioned he has in it.

"Stock block 347 with mahle forged pistons, comptech forged 6.125 rods, polished crank, Melling oil pump ported by thunderracing, ASP pulley, ported and polished heads with 3 angle valve job with springs to hold the TREX v2 cam, compcam lifters. Zero miles. Everything is brand new NOT assembled!!!
I have 3800 tied up in just the parts, gaskets, studs, not including the machine work of the block honing and balancing of the rotating assembly.
Everything is here to put it together , just need to take it to a engine guy to have assembled, its ready to go. I sold my car before finishing this project."

Id be a little nervous with that CR, but thats just me. I personally dont think its worth pushing the CR on a street car for the small benefits. Why not just go the junkyard 6.0 route? You'll have less money into a 6.0 than an LS1 and be ahead of the game.

Just my opinion.

Well, I'm partial to the all aluminum aspect of the ls1 for weight savings which will also help in the handling department (I may do some autocrossing fun events). I think I'm kinda decided on LS1, just really looking for input on the parts listed as it's all new to me. If it were all for speed and straight line I'd agree cubes would be the way to go.

It'll run on pump gas no problem. Remember, mid 90s F-Body and Corvette LT1s ran 10.5 with AL heads, the B-body ran 10.0 with iron.

The bottom end will last for a very long time. Weak spot in the motors are the factory rod bolts and hypereutectic pistons. He's covered both. Stock crank has seen power up over 800hp and survived. Hell some guys push em well over that. Factory heads are ok, especially since they are ported and have the matching springs for the cam. Now that cam is huge, especially for the LSx world. You don't need an overly large cam to make big numbers from an LSx. I'd suggest going to a smaller cam, or otherwise you will need more stall, and probably more gear. I run a 4000 stall in my 216/226 baby cam LQ4.

All in all, depends on the price he's asking. You can pick up a stock 5.3, 5.7, 6.0 (iron truck or LS2 aluminum car) for halfway decent prices still. Slide a cam in and you will have some good numbers. Are you looking for a driver? Street/strip? Race?

How complete is this deal? Aren't LS1's cathedral port heads? Is there a carb intake that will match those heads (I'm asking, I'm not sure)? I just decided to go EFI over carb cause when you add up, it's more cost effective to go FI (if you don't buy the tuner S/W)

Sounds like the guy has the bases covered, I think the weight savings over an iron block is 100ish pounds....something to think about. The weight specs are over on LS1tech if you want to know for sure.

Thanks for the input guys. It doesn't come with the intake or carb (I've got a new street avenger on the car now, so just need the edelbrock intake and controller package). The car (oops, not the Cutlass but instead my 71 vette  ) will be hot street, I'd like to get into some autocross events (recreationally) so the LS1's weight savings was a big plus, it'll also see 1 or 2 drag strip visits a year, but it'll run what it runs, not looking to sacrifice any other aspects to squeeze out 10ths. I wanted to go carb since it'll be easier to run the 2004r I already own, and the injection is a little more difficult an install on c3's than g-bodies. I can pick this stuff up locally for $3k, sound good? He says $3800 in major parts and $1900 in machine work and little parts and is ready to go together.
