how can i tell if my car originally came with a v-8?

ok i tried to search, no luck..this is a roller i bought, has a different front clip...so how do i know if this originally had a v-8 or v-6??...the reason i would like to know is the front springs. this is gonna be a street/ strip ride so v-6 springs are prefered..lol..so how do i know??..thanks

what year is it?

the 5th digit of the VIN is the engine code....I have a decoder book someplace but can't find it right now. post up a little more info and maybe someone can help

ahhah!.. the 5 th digit is...U..its a 78 malibu..i believe it had a v-8 before i got it...but the sticker on the rad support says v-6..so i really dont know..any help is appreciated!
