personally I wouldnt choose either of those heads. you will only end up not happy and swapping them for what will work later. Save your money and get something better or try to scrub the internet and run some 049 or 781 casting iron heads to get by.

for a cam, I would reccommend something around 250 @ .50 duration and as close to 700 lift as you can get while staying on a 108 or 110 lobe separation. Lunati or Bullet cams are good choices. .02

I have a very similar short block as you but I run factory GM aluminum rectangle port heads, 1050 dominator and had a .680 .700 296 304 Lunati roller with a 5700 converter and ran a best of 6.38 at 3400lbs. Swapped to a nitrous grind cam with .724 .719 306 319 from a 110 l/s to a 112 and ran a 6.44 and 5.80s on a 225 shot. Id look into the Comp Cam .680 .680 rollers as they make great power and are easy on valve train parts. You need at least the 400 converter and dont be so quick to shun rectangle port heads on a car with a loose converter.

Neither both are way too big unless you plan on spinning it to 8500 or put it in a 1700lb car. Stick with a 305-320cc head and youll be much happier.

Patriot/Hebert

these heads are not exactly designed to perform as 'bolt on'

I believe the intention was to get a 'core' head on the market for cheap so that the individual 'do it yourself' guy could port them for real power at an affordable price.

I've heard nothing but good things about 049's and 781's that were hand ported. Why wouldn't the patriot/hebert respond the same way?

Hebert heads are Procomp AKA "junk". Patriot heads are a pretty decent casting assembled in Alabama. If its a lower rpm lower compression motor then by all means a properly built set of oval ports will more than do the job but alot of people are getting good results out of even a production rectangle port as long as youve got enough converter to flash past the lower rpm range. If your converter flashes to 5500 on launch then why would you want a set of heads that make peak power in the 4000 rpm range. His choice of heads will depend greatly on the rest of the combo. All parts need to be paired together. If he chooses a rect port head then he needs a loose converter and a cam that makes power in the upper rpm range if he chooses an oval port then he can use a tighter converter and a cam that has more mid range power.
