I have a bone stock 402 big block. I purchased a performer rpm intake for it and I'm having. Hard time selecting a cam. One guy says one thing the next feels another.....I have a buddy who's dad put a cam with .575 degrees of lift and loved it...was stock minus the intake and headers....I plan to run headers and put. Small stall in with my th400. Does anyone have any exact experience or is a engine builder? I'd like to upgrade the cam while it's put I really want to get the aggressive tone from the cam while keeping it a true street car.
This one was recommended to me
And this one

I think the lunati one is a good choice. I wouldn't go any larger than that on a stock engine. It would be worth upgrading the valve springs at the same time and making sure you don't have coil bind.

Thats the one i was set one. I was looking at a kit...new timing set...cam. lifters . Springs..valve seals...etc 405 bucks for it. All do you think that will have a nice lump to it...with some flowmasters or dynomax mufflers

If your 402 doesn't have the big dome version of pistons, I would say 262-268 duration cam. 213-223 @ .050. If you go with a big lift camshaft, the cylinder wall begins to shroud the valves. The 396/402 blocks have a valve relief cut for some help. Or, to put it another way, you will not gain much going up over say .515-.520 lift.

The thing to remember is the 396 is much smaller than the now run of the mill 454, a 268 duration cam in a 454 is no big deal, in a 396 you need an intake, stall, and headers.

I think that VooDoo 262/268 cam looks pretty good.

A lot of expertise on speedtalk forum. I recommend talking to "Camking" Mike Jones over there.
FWIW I put one of his dinky hydraulic cams in my crate 260hp 350 chevy engines. I got 33 more horsepower with no other mods and 3-4 mpg! He loves to challenge "shelf grinds" and factory camshafts. He makes something from stock cams to 3000hp turbo engines. Hes also done r&d for Detroit as well.
