an old hot rodder who lives down the road from me dropped in while i was working on my car to check it out. he was wondering what he could hear "rumbling" from down the street. anyway, when he saw the primer on my car, he had a tip for me. he said i could sand the car with extremely fine sandpaper and then wipe the car down with pledge furniture polish!! he said it seals it in and the water runs right off it after. i'm not sure that i'm brave enough to attempt this, i just thought it was interesting. anyone else ever hear this?

i've heard of that,it's an old used car trick. down the road you'll never get paint to stick to it after you do that.let us know how it looks!

I used to do that "back in the day" to protect the flat paint (hoods and factory stripes).
It would give it a waxed protection and we didn't have anything else that would not leave white residue. Any spray furniture polish would work.
Melloelky is right. You'll have to go to the metal before repainting. Scott's Liquid Gold was my favorite. Armour All was a few years away and Scott's was always on my wash rack.

Used car tricks? Trans fluid on dead red/maroon/dark brown paint. It also worked well for the old woodgrain station wagons.
STP to build line pressure in automatic trans. Have a powerglide that slips from first to second? Plug the vacuum modulator and.....presto!
Bent frame that won't track straight? One chrome reverse wheel on that side hidden behind the full wheel covers brings it right back to normal.
Valve seals leaking and blue smoke at idle? About 8 ounces of brake fluid in the old crankcase, let it run a few minutes and.....no smoke for about 1500 miles. The brake fluid will swell the old seals. I've seen it quit smoking within 2 minutes after pouring it in.
I spent a lot of years around the dealer auctions in the late 60's and early seventies. No telling what goes on now.

no wonder us used car salesmen have such a bad reputation!! :lol:

i don't know if i'll be trying the pledge trick or not....i like the way it looks as it is. just thought i'd see if anyone's ever done it. for those who have....how often do you have to re-apply it?

It would be very difficult to do an entire car and not have it come out spoty or streaked.
The hoods and stripes were work to keep evenly waxed.
There are probably products out there specifically for this now that won't turn the flat black , white like the old waxes did.
