first engine I ever built was a 283. Installed it in my first 78 malibu. Drove the snot out of it. revved to the moon, horrible down low with the factory 2.56 gears LOL but it liked the open highway :D Used a smallish Summit cam 420 intake lift 443 exh lift and a 204/214 duration split. I had a later model 76cc heads so I installed domed pistons when I built it to keep the compression up, was about 9.5:1 IIRC. They wont be a 350 torque wise but there's nothing wrong with them. Once they are in their powerband they almost feel like a 2 stroke!

Yes, It's a 283, Me a friend of mine ran the numbers we found (# 3849852) This one say it's a 220hp 283 built between 1957 & 1966 for Cars and Trucks. We found another number but I cannot find anything on it (F0328D). Unsure if it's a zero or an O. I was thinking of boring it .30 and maybe installing a 327 or 350 crank and a set of double hump heads, Unsure of what I will get ??....Help!!

You can throw a "Duntov" style solid cam in it with dual quads & make an easy 270, like the 59 Corvette optional RPO 469C (or better yet, the 290 HP RPO 579D Rochester Fuel Injection).

My spare motor is a 283 with 305 heads-mildly ported .488 lift Summit hydraulic cam and stock shortblock. With a 5.14 gear and loose converter, Performer RPM intake and 600dp Holley it goes 7.90s 1/8 mile (12.60s 1/4). I only rev to 6400 with the mild cam. With the open X-pipe it screams like a banshee. People swear I turn it 8500. Deadly consistent bracket motor. Oh yeah - 9:1 and runs good on 89 octane. Bulletproof little motor.

Agreed.... If I were to do it again, I think I'd probably do something a little different than a crate 350. Sure, it's a safe bet and all I had to do was install it and start it, but I think a built 283 would be a little more out of the ordinary and unique......
