From the sound of things a 283 would make for some fun, but it could get pricey for a little high rpm engine. You may see an increase in mileage with just an intake swap and opening the exhaust a little (at the very least make sure the exhaust doesn't have any restrictions).

If it was mine, I would probably just add a set of Vortecs and matching intake plus possibly a small call around 420/442 lift like I got from Summit awhile back.
