I'd want to know what gear I had currently- sounds like you have a low (high numerical) gear in there now, or a very loose torque converter.

If you don't have a rad cam, you could get by w/something like a 2.73 to 3.23 rear gear. Highway friendly, but offer some acceleration.

Ratios as high a 2.29 (Edit- 2.14 in '79) were available, but they are stupid-high, IMHO.

Available OEM ratios for the 7.5" (and were also available in the 8.5", 2.41-up, IIRC) diff include:
2.29, 2.41, 2.56, 2.73, 2.93, 3.08, 3.23, 3.42, 3.73.

Another option is to keep the steep gear and swap the transmission for a TH700R4 w/OD.

Good luck.

Big cam w/high gears won't be a happy combination.

You might seriously consider the OD transmission swap. You can also use a lock up TC, takes a aftermarket lock up switch. In your case the transmission to use would be a TH700R4. It has a .7 overdrive, so a 4.11 rear gear becomes a 2.88. Very highway friendly.

I'd say a 3.08 with a TH350. The cam isn't too big if it's that HE 268 in your sig, and a 3.08 won't put you at too high of an rpm on the expressway (26" tall tire with 3.08s will be around 2800rpm @ 70mph, 2200rpm @ 55mph).

Agreed. Personally I'd go with a 2004R, 1st to 2nd gear isn't as much of a drop as a 700R-4. I'd probably go with something like a 3.42 though. With the 4-speed I have and 2.29s the ratios figure almost identical to a 2004R with 3.42s, and with ~375hp it's hard to keep the tires from going up in smoke in 1st gear.

I'm with you. I didn't consider the OP had a 268 when he said "big cam".

The only reason I gave the nod to the TH700R4 is because of the lack of a computer. Obviously there are boxes that will allow him to use the TH2004R in a non-ECM app, and I personally like the 200 a little more than the 4L60E. But if there are budget restraints, I'd go w/the 700.

3.42's would be my limit, for sure. My poor ol' wagon has those dreadful 2.29"s, too. Soon to be remedied, along w/a few other little details (engine, M20 swap, tires and wheels, paint... lol).

It could have been worse; you could have had 2.14:1.
Well, my wagon's a '80, so I'm safe. But the OP could have had them in his '79. He sure wouldn't have a problem of too much RPM at cruise speed w/them, would he?!?
