Problem is your converter and transmission. Your best gain would be to swap in a 2004r or a 700r4 OD transmission with a lockup converter. That will be the best gain to your MPG and retain most of the performance. You basically need lockup converter to make the most of it.
I'm running a combo of this one. I have 3:73 gears with the 700R4, and I'll be runnign 275/60/15's when I get the new wheels. That should keep the rpm's torerable while still offering some good acceleration.. dancin_banana.gif
Forgot to say the method I try to stick to. I usually start with the tire height, and depending on the trans I usually try to aim for 1700-2000rpm at 70mph, a little higher if it's a 6-speed.
My vote is also for the 3.23 set up. I have run it with mild to wild engines in street cars when using a th350. Now on the other hand, if you can step up to a 700R4 transmission and use a 3.73 gear it would be even better.
