Is it horsepower or combination of hp and traction that will kill the stock rear on a malibu? My 80 Malibu wagon has 300hp 350. Too slow. Was about to order ZZ383 but now wonder, should I do rearend first? It's my daily driver so will not have slicks and repeated drag race passes until I can sort out new rearend. On same topic what is easiest bolt in rear? Not many GNs or 442s being parted out up here in Canada but tons of S10s, which I have reason to believe might be a good donor for a casual racer. t or f ? :-k

The stock rear won't appreciate a ZZ383 very much. Even if you Grandma drive it, it's just a matter of time. I'd say step up the rear first.

#1 killer is shock loading, as in a hard launch with weight transfer and the tires glued to the surface or a spinning tire that suddenly finds traction. Other causes are exceeding torque capacities of components and if ya' think about it, how many years if not decades has it been in service probably without a single fluid change.

If you arent there hooking up on a track and not abusing the thing, it will be allright till you get the money to upgrade the rear.
S10 rears are not as wide as a malibu so you couldnt use the whole thing but you can use whats in them. The gears, posi's, etc.
Just take it easy on it till then.

Anything has to be better than stock. A couple of good hard 4 speed shifts and the rear ends shot.
