Anyone put "gears" behind a 3.8?

You guys give me a chuckle ;) My ideal rpm is about 1700 at 70, but with the current trans that would require a 1.8:1 rearend ratio, but that's just silly. Here's the math (tires taken out of the equation): Saginaw 4-speed, 3-line input shaft (3.50:1 1st gear) with 2.29s: 3.50*2.29=8.015...

700r4 lock up control via SSBC A0730........

The only issue is that's a normally open switch I'm assuming, and closes to turn the brake lights on when you push the pedal. It would work for triggering a relay to disengage lockup though.

LSx, and mechanical linkage 4 speed?

I think a different bellhousing may be required, I don't know if LS motors are typically 153- or 168-tooth. Scoggin-Dickey has a bracket to keep the original location for mechanical linkage. http://sdparts.com/details/scoggin-dickey-parts-center/sdcb

    how much power will a 7.5 ??

Wow, that's a lot of oomph for a 7.5"

    Creep in park/tight reverse

I'm not a trans expert either, but it does sound like something is amiss with the valve body, unless there is some sort of adjustment for the shifter detent inside the trans. If it's in park and wants to move forward and fights reverse, sounds like gears that shouldn't have pressure are getting...

Anyone put "gears" behind a 3.8?

Actually I think 2.14 would be even better for me... I'd like to have 1800RPM or lower @ 70, and even with a 28" tire and 2.29s I turn about 2000RPM right now. With the 275/40/17s it'll be up around 2100...

Anyone put "gears" behind a 3.8?

I'm sure 3.73s would help, with a v6 the car probably came with something like 2.73 or 3.08 is my guess... with 2.29s the thing would probably take another minute or so to get up to 60mph

    brakes randomly locking up

Power or manual brakes? Since you replaced the master cylinder I might start looking there... braking systems aren't that complicated. Pressure's building up somehow...

    Charging circuit

That's what I was thinking. I figure he has major issues if the ground strap actually made a difference when the ground cable is supposed to be connected to the block  I actually ran a short 10 gauge wire from the fender where the battery ground is connected to the radiator support for...

    Wiring....not again..(keeps the thread going)....

Pressure will vary with bearing clearance, but where it's at sounds pretty good. Mine idles around 45-50 warm, and by somewhere around 1200-1500 it's at 60 or higher.

    Charging circuit

He claimed that a ground strap from the body to the engine made all the difference in the world on the charging system. He said that the charging system wouldn't work properly if there was no ground strap from the body to the block. To that I kept trying to get him to understand that the...

"The Ultimate Steering Guide" - PHR magazine

I picked up June's issue of Popular Hot Rodding, they have an article describing the different aspects of steering (ackerman, caster/camber, toe angle, under/oversteer, wheel diameter, slip angle, scrub radius, bumpsteer, and yaw). It may not be the most in-depth, but I think it's good info for...

    WILL A 8.8 FIT UNDER A 79 MALI???

One or two of the vendors here make a set of bolt-in arms for an 8.8, but I believe there's a geometry issue because of where the upper ears are located.

    smog/emission diagram

Here they be 8) Hopefully they'll help... I know they'll be helpin' me if I ever go with regular insurance on my '78. I'm going with collector's insurance (to start with at least) - don't want to have to piece together an emissions system from nothing.

    Wiring....not again..(keeps the thread going)....

For sure. That's how it's set up from the factory, but the factory diagram also shows the resistor. If you can't get it to work with the bulb (poor connection or otherwise), the resistor would be the next easiest step imo.

    Weird charging problem

It's kind of off topic far as the OP is concerned... has anyone ever gone with a MIL-spec cable from the back? That would probably be my choice, being that it's run so far and some guys run the cable along the frame.

    Wiring....not again..(keeps the thread going)....

I found a couple at Radio Shack, but the current/wattage that flows through the resistor is close to/over its limit at 10 ohms. You would be better finding at least a 20w resistor. I use Google for searches like this sometimes, but you may try MCM or PartsExpress. At 14.4v a 10 ohm resistor...
