I started rebuilding the stock/worn out Buick GN rear I just bought. Everything outside is rusted solid. Everything inside is worn out. This may take a while!
I also got my MT drag radials installed (bolted to the old 7.5 rear for now, since the GN rear isn't ready for prime time yet)...
This GN rear end I bought turns out to be a complete pile of ****. Naturally. They all are. I expected this one to be, and it has not disappointed.
So, the spider and side gears in it are completely roached. Some of the spider gear teeth are almost folded over flat. Super.
Plenty of...
Elky- I don't know what TH350 is in it, except to say that it's whatever came stock in a factory 79 Malibu. It's not the awful Metric trans. That much I confirmed absolutely. It's a factory-stock TH30 for a G-body Malibu.
I'm putting a (stock for now) GN 8.5 rear under the back of my Malibu. Will the driveshaft from the GN fit into the TH350 trans? I can't remember if the TH350 output shaft is in the same location, same spline count, etc. as the 200-4R used in the GN.
L'il help? Thanks in advance.
No way to know what the springs are just by looking at them. Well, you can tell progressive rate springs from constant rate springs (are the coils evenly spaced?).... but that's about it from a visual inspection.
If it's lower on one side than the other the first thing I would do is swap them...
Man, that's still slow. You should be rockin-n-rollin. 86 through the traps at that weight is, like Lilbowtie says, only about 360HP (at the wheels).
I am STILL scratching my head on this one.
My gut tells me this is not a valvetrain problem. You're not complaining about "hitting the...
The Autolite AR-series of plugs you used, Bowtie81, are side-gapped "racing" plugs that WILL wear out nightmarishly fast on the street (they work great when racing, though!). I've experienced the same problem with them EVERY SINGLE TIME I've tried to use them on the street, so you're not alone...
"The plugs Im using dont have washers."
That could be what caused the problem. They should be gasket-seat plugs, not old tapered-seat plugs. Autolite 3924 or equivalent.

The stock cam in the L69 305 HO is something like 203/207* @ .050 but on a WIDE 115* LSA and the ramps are typical stock/lazy so they last a million years. Lift is right around .420" or so.
I've used a Summit K1102 (Edelbrock Performer) cam and it's fine. I would consider it just half a notch...
Buh buh buh...... OK, what's it run?
Where is it you think you are missing out on the fun? I agree the 210 heads are possibly a little big for the rest of the combo, but not ourtrageously so. The combo seems reasonably well matched.
The converter holding 2500 on the brake but flashing to...
The lifters are bleeding down as you are cycling the valvetrain (no oil pressure to pump them back up). RUN the engine after you have set the lash and see if they are quiet and the engine runs well.
981 springs work just peachy on Vortec heads with the inner dampener coils removed. Done it several times personally. You're good to go on that one.
BUT.... the computer controlled Qjet system is not likely to play nice with a cam that big. You can try it if you like, but just like most...
I'd check out THirdgen.org for chip tuning info, even though it's 3rd gen F-body stuff. The L69 and the system that controls it is nearly the same in the F-body as it was in the G-body.
FYI- the EGR system on a computer controlled carb motor had no DIRECT feedback to the ECM. The ECM could...
Yes, that's it.
If you are running mostly dragstrip with only modest street drivng you can run without the additive. It is there to REDUCE the friction on the clutch plates and prevent it from making noises going around turns. I used to run my old 94 Formula without additive and it never...
Forget add-on suspension pieces. What you need is a good set of lower control arms with some decent performance bushings in them. That's job one on any stock suspension. The difference is dramatic. Wheel hop is typically eliminated entirely. And it still does all the stuff that a stock...
I can't speak for that particular set of headers in a G-body but all the usual problems you can imagine can happen.
I had to dimple a tube to clear my steering column and flatten one side of another tube to clear the kick-pan part of the florrpan in my truck when I used AFR heads (raised abnout...
Of any remaining good parts you have left from the valvetrain assemble intake and exhaust on ONE cylinder, adjust the valves properly (1/2 turn down from zero lash or whatever you prefer to use) and watch the rocker movement through the lift cycle. Just looking at the location of the poly-lock...
There's no real test for a gov-lock that I know of excapt to go out and lay down some black stripes on the road. If it lays down 2, it's working. If it lays down 1 it's not.
The weak link is the splines on the...... not sure what to call it...... the engagement collar. They strip out and...
