    4-speed or 5-speed question

Saginaws only came as 3- or 4-speeds.

SI to CS Alternator hookup on Malibu

The brown wire on the plug of the CS alternator needs a switched 12v source with a ~10-20 ohm resistance (the "battery" bulb will work for this) in between to trigger the alternator, and the stud on the back of the alternator uses the same wire as the SI alternator. The plug looks like this...

You'll probably have to make your own... just paint it black 8)

    Rear deck speakers

Malibus have 6x9s. If they don't fit you'll likely need to drop some machine screws through, secure them with a nut, then mount the speakers with additional nuts. It's what I did with mine.

    Valve timing in a nutshell

I stumbled across a nice little explanation of valve timing a little while ago, thought I'd share :) http://www.thedirtforum.com/lobesep.htm

    4-speed or 5-speed question

For a driver imo you can "get by" with a 3.50:1 1st gear Saginaw and 2.29 gear... you can use a stock TH350 driveshaft and crossmember, just have to mount the linkage/pedals and cut a hole for the shifter. That would be a good cruising ratio, and will be geared similar to a 2004R with 3.42...

    lockup or non

RPMs usually drop 2-300 max, but you won't have any RPM change as you would with an unlocked converter (RPM would stay constant at whatever speed).

    TKO-600 input needed before purchase

From what I read in Car Craft a few months back, a 454 with an XE268 made around 450hp/550tq.

    shared interior parts

Far as what looks best I say it's personal preference. You can pretty much narrow dash down by make like Ribbedroof did... Chevy (Malibu/El Camino/Monte), Pontiac (Grand Prix, LeMans, etc.), Olds (Cutlass), and Buick (Regal). One exception to this is the "Mexican" Montes that had the Pontiac...

And wherever you pull the most vacuum is where it'll get the most mileage... within a reasonable rpm.

    Am I a good candidate.... E85?

High compression race motor... sounds like E85 to me if all tunes well. If they stop carrying E85, put a gas carb on ;)

    Serpentine belt swap

That appears to be a reasonable price, considering how much a machine shop would probably charge even if you gave them the dimensions.

They came with 3- and 4-speed Saginaws, which are 10-spline.

    TKO-600 input needed before purchase

I have 3.08s in my '92 Sierra with a 700R4 and 275/60/15 (~28"). RPM may be better (helping mpg) being a little higher, but it moves along just fine as it is. If you're doing a mild 454 like you said, I think you'll be fine with you combo... 2000-2200 would probably be just right because it'll...

    fays2 watts link system

That would be cheaper, but I think the factory 4-link does a decent job in itself. You don't see a lot of guys modifying it too much, just making it more robust. An anti-roll bar would probably be better if you're going strip only.

    fays2 watts link system

You'll have fun trying to do both. Far as a watts link, the only advantage would be the same as any other application, it keeps the rear centered.

I think SBC and BBC flywheels are different. You can use all your stock linkage, etc. Look on the main page of the site (not the forum) for Meat Drapes' install of a TKO into his Malibu, it should answer most if not all of your questions.

 It's an older Core2Duo Gateway gaming laptop (P-7811FX), 4Gb ram... seems to handle it fine. It's feeling its age though, newer games need to be turned way down to get decent framerates. I'm hoping to build a desktop in the next several months, my first in probably 5 years now.
