i had a very bitter sweet day today. I have an 84 Regal that im swapping a 5.3/4L60E into. after many weeks of blood and swet and REALLY mean the blood part. i finally got to the point of putting in the key and turning this babay over. 1st crank had some spit and sputter and then it died. i waited a sec and crack 2 was the majic touch. this thing came alive with a very smooth idle and music to the ears. i let it idle about 6-7min and and yes the moment of true glory i sat in the car put that baby in reverse and NOTHING!! i put it in drive and NOTHING again. checked fluids thinking i put in 5 qrts so its still low lets go for more and the dip stick reads perfect. pulled the trans line to the rad and bone dry. is there a procedure im supposed to do to prime the trans pump?? i'm sure no super mechanic but i have done a trans or 2 before.

when i bought the trans the guy i got it from said it had been rebuilt and never installed becouse he had decided to go manual instead. im starting to think he got me

ANY input is welcome.

Great question, if you did not, you'll need more fluid. There isn't any priming that I remember doing to mine. You may also want to put the car in gear from underneath (dangerous, so have a friend hold the brake pedal hard) to make sure its changing into gears. Do you have a column shifter or a floor shifter?

Did you drop the pan to replace the filter, etc. when doing the swap? If so, is there anyway the filter assembly could have come loose, preventing fluid pickup?

I think you are supposed to shift into each gear with the shifter and leave it there for 5 seconds. On some GM trans', that's the procedure for a fluid fill on a new trans. But I'm not sure on the 4L60e

I didn't open the trans at all becouse of the sellers claim of "Fresh Rebuild". i did lift the car up and put it in gear to see if the tires would roll with no resestance and nothing there either (column shft). Technically speeking i do know its very low on ATF but again with the 6 qrts in i was thinking the trans pump should start pulling fluid lowering the trans pan level allowing me to continue to add to actually reach correct ATF capacity. i'm gooing to pull the trans pan just to see if there is anything immediatly obvious. ](*,)
i'm hoping to get back on it again in the next day or two.......

Just a quick update... i took the trans back out and it looks like the trans pump tabs that the TC goes into are broken. so i took the trans pump out and it really does not look like a very complex repair. so i have parts on order and ill try to get my trans back together. And get back to positive progress. i cant wait sit back in the seat and put that thing in gear.....
