Car with MSD keeps running with kill switch off

Sorry if this has been discussed before but my search turned up nada.

I have an 82 Regal with a BBC, MSD dist and a 6al.

The first issue is that I have to turn the key several times before it will turn over. When it doesnt I get a series of clicks like the solenoid in trying to engage. When it does turn over it goes like gangbusters.

I think this may or may not be related to the second issue:

The car will keep running after I turn the ignition key off. Even when I hit the kill switch on the bumper it continues to run until the carb is out of gas. I have an electric pump controlled by a switch so I don't completely run out of fuel.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am trying to get this car ready for a race and it needs tuning time more than troubleshooting time wasted.

Regards,

John

I had the same problem with my MSD the fix is to splice in a diode in the brown wire coming off the alternator, which is back feeding the MSD and and giving you the no shut down deal. As far as the starting I would look at the ignition switch on top of the column.

Thanks guys I will clean up all my grounds and splice in a diode.

I think I actually have a diode in my toolbox. Good to be a packrat sometimes :)

If you need to eliminate a backfeed to the MSD from the alternator, your kill switch isn't wired right. The kill switch should break the positive circuit from the battery to everything else in the car.

I HAD TO WIRE THE MSD AND THE FUEL PUMP TO THE OFF SIDE AND THE ALTERNATOR TO THE BATTERY SIDE OF THE DISC. SWITCH
