Closing up the gap for a sunroof

I have the huge precut hole from having a dealer installed sunroof. I'm looking to replace it with an aftermarket manual pop-up and ditch the tray.

Now there is a size that is larger than the hole already in my roof but its HUGE. It calls for a 22 x 38 cut hole and I'm thinking its gonna be awkwardly big...

Now heres what I'm thinking. The size I'd really prefer calls for a cut size of 18 x 28. My existing hole in my roof is 17-3/4 x 33-1/4. Which would require an 1-5/8s patch panel on the sides. Welding them in has me concerned with warping the roof...

I was at my buddys the other day and him and his dad were telling me about how when they did the quarters on his 70 impala they used a flanging tool, panel adhesive, and self tappers to put them on. Any thoughts on using this method on my roof or should I just man up and tack it in?

I had mine installed about 20 years ago. The glass itself measures 17.5 by 32 inches. Sorry this is the best pic I have of it and it is packed up on winter vacation at the moment. :( For your reference.

Panel adhesive would be the way I would do it. No heat warp.

My nephew owns a body shop and they glue roof panels, bedsides and door skins all the time.

Because it's a patch and not a full panel, try to brace it as well to stop any flex.
