Th "XH" box is from '86-'92 Camaro IROC & Fireirds with the WS6 package. '80+ GM cars share pump lines. For '79 you'll need to either get adapter fittings or swap pumps & lines from an '80+. The box itself is a direct bolt in IF you already have a "4 bolt" 800 box. Just reuse the existing pitman arm. If you have the "round top" 605 box, you'll need to get a G-body 800 Pitman arm, too.

Just remember that those later boxes like the WS6/Trans Am box also use different hose fitting than an early G-body. 38* flare with SAE fitting (early) and double flare + o-ring with metric fittings on the later boxes. When I put an '88 WS6 box in my 78 I also swiped the pump along with it. On the high pressure side I used a hose from a mid-80s Caprice. Return line I just built my own. The WS6 pitman arm fit my '78 centerlink exactly like the original.

Also, the later metric pumps won't fit the original V-belt PS bracket without some trimming. They are ever so slightly larger in the body/reservoir even though they look identical to the eye.

I think the change-over to metric boxes happened around 80 or 81.

Hi guys,

im offered to buy a steering box out of a lt1 camaro/trans am 93-97, i think it has 12,7:1 ratio

Will it bolt to my 79? i dont worry about the hose fittings i can deal with that, as long as it makes ANY sense to do this i wanna check that option out more.

Hope to get some answer guys! :)

Her are pics of my box.

That's a different box. You want the box from an 80's IROC/ WS6 Trans Am.

Alright, i´ve found a box from a 86 trans am. Now im wondering what kind of box is in my car (seen on pics) isint it the "round top" 605 box?

What does that leave me?

-will it bolt into place?
-cant i use the trans am pitarm or the pitarm of the 605 box?
-ill need adapters for the hoses that go into the box right?

I have bolted up a steering box from a 86 camaro. The pit arm from the old box does not fit the camaro box. The pitarm that was on the camaro box is about 15mm longer than the orginal pitarm on the orginal box so it does not fit like the old one did.

I asked a local shop to assist me with the pitarm dilema but the guy working on the car died serveral minutes after taking a look at it (no joke) So i just picked it up and now it sits in my garage.

My plan is to screw the tie rod ends and check if my pit arm will bolt to the track rod, because now the track rod is banged to crossmember if im trying to connect the pitarm and track rod together.

If you have any more info that i can use, please share
