If you still have the charcoal canister line on the car you can just use that as the vent. I often run the line up in front of the radiator (just rubber fuel line) and stiick a little filter on the end of it. Works fine for equalizing tank pressure and nothing ever dribbles out of it. But you don't have that so....

A correct factory vented cap is what you want- it will not leak. It allows air INTO the tank quite readily (relieving any vacuum condition inside the tank instantly). It will only allow air OUT of the tank when pressure inside the tank reaches about 1 PSI (to prevent rupturing or distroting the sheet metal tank on hot days).

Screwing a much later model cap from a different vehicle onto your old Malibu is just asking for problems. They may look similar but they don't work the same.

yea i picked up the stock cap for a malibu yesterday..the only reason we tried the truck cap was were at the track already and the cracked cap dumped out alot of fuel..and so did the truck cap..it was only so we could keep running that day at the track..i'm going to drop the tank this weekend to run a vent of some sort...one guy also told me he once vented a tank by coiling the hose a few times then put an axle vent on the end..so i'm getting some great ideas

That's exactly how the "old" caps work, but unfortunately there is no such thing for a G-body or any other emissions era car...

I agree. I've kept my eyes open for one for quite awhile with no luck.
I just stuck a small piece of 3/8" fuel line on the end of the vent tube right above the rear axle and put a plastic cheapie fuel filter on it to filter any dirt or bugs that may try to get in the tube. I don't drive the car in the rain or on real dusty roads so I am fine with it.
The only downside I see to my setup is- If the car were to roll over and land on it's roof, I think gas would just run out of it. I've never had the car upside down so I don't know for sure.

As always, I try to admit when I'm wrong. The stock caps ARE vented- Stant has one, #10817:
