No, bore centers are the same, You can put a 305 crank in a 350 block and end with, well, 350 ci.

Yes, same crank. Even a 267 has a "350" crank.

I put a 305 TPI in my 79 wagon. I have learned a few things.

-First off, 305's are a great underrated motor. They're dirt cheap because the hillbilly engine hoarders think they're junk. Let them have their oil buring 350's. If size is that important, why don't people built 400's? Or 454's? or 572's? Maybe put six 572's in a row!

-Get an aftermarket harness. The original harness is a mess with headlight/windshield wiper/cruise control/etc wiring mixed in with the engine wiring. It is a nightmare. I started to go through one and decided time was better spent on a new harness. I bought one from a very smart guy off ebay for around $250 made to order. I told him length from ECU to engine bay, and added/subtracted connectors as needed (EGR, canister purge, etc) Also the wiring was new, labeled and easy to route.

-Go with the overdrive. The TCC lockup will be controlled by the ECU and wiring you will have. Its easier and better. Win-win. Crossmember and driveshaft are minor compared to the end result.

-I used a late model Tahoe fuel sending unit module and put it into a new stock gas tank. No fuel starving problems, even with less than an eighth tank while autocrossing. Try that with a plain baffled tank. I just enlarged the hole in the gas tank, and made a bracket to hold it in place on top.

-I ran -6 line to and fro for the supply and return lines. I used adapters to allow a stock fuel filter.

-If you do upgrade the engine, TBIchips.com helped me for a decent price.

-A Firebird air intake is perfect fit, if you move the battery.

-1 14" and 1 10" electric fan will cool that thing just fine, and fits the radiator perfectly.

I could write a book on this...wait, I just did.

Eh, you'd spend about the same at a junkyard on a 305 or 350, so why not go for a bigger displacement? ;) 400s are a little different than a 305/350.

Good writeup, but how is a 350 any more of an oil burner compaired to a 305, its the same engine with bigger holes..? You mean to say a gas burner?

BTW, where in WI are you from?

In displacment and casting numbers, just like the 350 and 305 comparison?

Maybe a couple steam holes to scare away some people. The argument of displacement is infinite. Why not just put a Merlin 16 cylinder airplane engine in the thing? ](*,)

My point is to use what you have. And this guy has a 305. Advice to nix what you have and buy different because of 45 ci seems beyond ludacris.

So to answer the original guys post constructively, answer the TPI question with something about wiring, fuel injection, or the overdrive transmission. The old retort of "gitta tree fitty" helps no one.

I agree with you that to dump an allready had 305 for a 350 would seem like a waste, but it really depends how far he wants to take it. Stock, then I agree and say keep the 305 if its known to be good. But if he wants to build that thing, then I would find another engine. my .02$

You're the one that brought up the displacement argument  I wasn't talking about what you may already have.
My point still stands, if you go out looking for an engine, it's not cost-effective to get a 305 over a 350 from a performance standpoint. Period.

Actually, Mickey Tutone brought up the displacment issue with a candid if not child-like comment of "305s suck ### hole ". As entertaining as it may be to poke fun of such a constuctive comment, I'll digress.

A 305 is only 13% smaller than a 350. It also is a more efficient design, in my opinion. Anyone can make a huge bore by huge stroke engine, throw a few gallons of gas in it, and burn rubber all day. To do that efficiently is a better challenge. Many sanctioned races limit cubic inches as well. So claimer 305 parts are dirt cheap, and fairly tough.

The argument about shrouded valves seems worthless to me. Get a more efficient valve and head and it'll be a non-issue. I understand the whole no replacement for displacment argument. But the 350 is actually on the small side of engines being built for hot-rodding around. At least in rear wheel drive jalopies.

My point is that the 305 is not the worthless boat anchor many make it out to be. But I also think the QuadraJet is one of the best carbs made.

Plus when him and I beat the humping 350 chumps (or the random 5.0), we get to tell them they lost to a 305. I get to add more misery with a wagon, no less. dancin_banana.gif
