I recently bought a new shifter cable for my quarter stick and I'm having some trouble installing it. It didn't come with any install instructions but it looked straight foward enough that I didn't think I would have any trouble with it. Everything is hooked up right from the way it looks but when I move the shifter it wants to move the gear selector on the Trans the opposite way? Anyone have any pics of one installed so I can see if I have everything in order. I found the actual hurst install instructions online so I have that much, but it doesn't have any illustrations.

Did you buy the shifter new or used?

Did u buy a reverse pattern shifter?

Is there a part number on the shifter?

Did the shifter work properly before?

Bought the shifter used and someone had cut the original cable. It may not be a foward pattern shifter? It seems to function fine as far as the mechanical parts. It's a front cable exit quarter stick with a pistol grip shifter handle. I'll have to look for the part # when I get home. I'm liable to have the wrong shifter/cable combo if that's possible?

I thnk your shifter relationship to your shift lever on the side of the transmission is the issue. Are you sure the lever is on the transmission correctly? It should be down (I think?) B&M shifters are that way. Does the cable mount to the rear of the lever or front? These two things are where your problems lies.

The cable type or the shift pattern plate won't matter. Even if the shifter was for a reverse valve body trans or vice-versa...the setup wouldn't be backwards...the shift gate would just be wrong. Rob

I'll take a pic of it tonight and post it up so you can physically see how I've got it hooked up. Going off memory the lever on the Trans is pointing down and the cable is going through the hole from the outside. I even wraped the cable the opposite direction to see if that change anything which it did, but the problem just reversed itself, it was either pulling when it needed to push or the other way around.

I may have found a missing piece of the puzzle. I don't have the bracket that attaches to the Trans pan and holds the cable in place. Would that be a big factor causing the the entire cable to move rather than the rod inside the sleeve?

Well at least I know what to order to fix the problem. Maybe when I'm seeing the cable try and push or pull in the wrong direction is the fact that the cable is physically moving and pushing/pulling itself instead of moving the transmission lever.
