did you ever try and time it before you took it apart?

beware of long bolts on the intake.

try the piston stop/degree wheel and see if your damper agrees with the timing tab.

no cant say that i timed it before hand because it was running already. Engine ran fine for months. then i realized that the two middle intake bolts on the driver side where loose. tightened them up and then i got valve train clatter. i didnt put two and two together until I had already taken off the intake.

If I am going to need to get a degree wheel and such then I will just take it apart and build something good out of it lol.

But I am unsure now if it is a 327 or a 350. Since it was suppose to be a 350. But all roads sort of lead to a 327 now. Casting number was 3956618 (302,327,350 all in 69). So I took the number off the front pad V0204HV. V=Flint, 02=Feb, 04= 4th day, HV=1965 327 but that is the part that gets me. How does a block that is casted in 1969 get in a 1965 vette?

It probably wasn't the original motor for the vette. Build a 383 out of it.

you don't need to take it that much apart. Just use a piston stop and mount a degree wheel to the damper to find TDC. Mark your damper to agree with the timing tab.

Are you sure it is not HY, which is a 1969 Corvette code (350 with manual transmission).

I thought it might of been a HY or an HW but I took some sandpaper (220) and some paint thinner and am pretty sure its HV now.

Really leaning to the wrong cover or balancer at this moment. So I will try to get it TDC without the dizzy in. then try dropping the dizzy in with the rotor point to #1.

you don't need to remove the distributor. With a piston stop and degree wheel, you can precisely find TDC. Any other technique is just a guess.

Once you mark your balancer in the location that agrees with your timing tab, you are done.

Engine is in a 77 Nove. Engine is out of a 68-69 Chevy of some sort. Is suppose to be a 350 but am really thinking its a 327 after looking up all the numbers.

283 and 327 blocks have a small 'rib' running down the passenger side on the front of the block between the intake manifold and the timing cover. You can stick your finger into the one on the 283 and touch bottom. You can't get your finger into that space on the 327. The 350 blocks don't have this feature.

OK so I got a piston stop and a degree wheel. Did as suggested and went one way till it stopped then went the other till it stopped and used middle of both as TDC. Car will actually idle on its own now but something is still a bit off. Idle sounds like its got a miss in it. If i rev it up it will pop back through the carb. Rotating the dizzy either direction doesnt seems to help clear it out. Any ideas on what might be the issue now? I Replaced the plugs and the rotor as well. Rotating the dizzy clock wise brings idle too low and kills it. Going counter clockwise its speeds idle up but once i get about 1/4 inch from the intake it will just cut off (vacuum advanced almost touching intake). Do I need to try moving the dizzy a couple of teeth and if so what direction? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

you could try moving the wires over 1 spot either way instead of pulling the dizzy. Are the lifters set too tight on some? Is there any lifter noise?
