It is coming out of were the the speedometer cable goes into. I believe there is just an "o" ring which will be easy to change. I just wanted to know if there are any tricks or anything I should look out for.

Thanks

Take it out and check the "housing" for any burs, Clean, clean, clean with some laquer thinner, replace O-ring and put a light coating of RTV {black} on the O-ring area. Make sure you don't roll the O-ring out of the groove putting it back in. Mine leaked in the same spot after a $750 rebuild. Wasn't going to pull it and take it back, so I sealed it up myself. Good luck.

It should stay put when you pull it out of the transmission tail shaft, it only slides in the removable piece with the O-ring,{not sure what the technical name is for it}, It should slide back into the transmission by hand, DON'T use a hammer :!: Just some additional info for you if you need it..... That plastic gear meshes with output shaft, so the speedo will work. You can switch to a different color gear to get your speedo more accurate if it is reading too slow or fast. A local transmission shop could help you figure out which color to use, they usually just need the rear gear ratio.
Good luck!!!

There is also a lip seal around the gear shaft. The lip seal can be bad and the plastic gear tends to get a groove cut into it over time, reducing the effectiveness of the seal.

If you see a groove in the gear, replace it and the lip seal.
