Well, I have been noticing that i have this kind of grinding nouse in my car. I have always thought it might have been a wheel bearing. I iliminated that i idea not to long ago when i installed APP wheel studs up front to match the ones in the back, to make it track legal. Well, I thought it had to be in the motor then, it would seem like it would only do it at about 25-30 mph and then when I am at around 10-15 mph it would slow and stop. It would stop right before I came to a complete stop. Well, I drove it to work and it seem to get worse. I put the car in second when I was coming to a stop for some reason and BINGO it stopped making that noise. I don't know what is making that noise in there? Anyone know what it could be? I am no transmission expert and have not real knowledge of them. So, lets hear the ideas.

I know in manual transmissions, the trans will make noise in all gears except the one that has a bad part. Example; noise coming when in 1st, 2nd, and 4th, but not 3rd. Easy, problem is in 3rd. Seeing as automatics don't use gears, I have no idea.

Had a similar problem with the cutlass a while back. Totally thought it was a wheel bearing on the drivers side, but wasn't louder with the window down. After changing the bearings anyways it seemed to just get worse. Ended up being the speedo cable. Had take apart the dash to lube up the gauge and the cable itself with wd40 and havent had a problem since. Now my pontiac is doing the same exact thing since last week.
