It would always be "best" to have a full length ground cable to the engine, I am sliding by with a stud welded to the frame, and two more of them at the front, welded to the frame for a short cable to the engine, and the grounds for the wiring harness and accessories. The strap from engine or the ground post to body is essential as well.
If you have doubts about the ground through the alternator mount, a strap or wire from it to the block or other ground point won't hurt.
There are two sides to every DC circuit, and each is equally important. If there is resistance on the ground side, the alternator can overcharge, heat up, and have poor reliability, or the battery won't get charged, or your accessories and ignition could be subjected to low voltage conditions.
