Building an oldsmobile 350. Its going to have w31 heads with compression probably around 9:1. Roller rockers, full cam and valvetrain upgrade, full length headers, th350, performer rpm intake and holley 750. Power will be made in the lower rpm range for a street car. I have an msd 6al box. Is it worth the 3-400 bucks to get the pro billet ready to run msd distributor, or use my stock HEI distributor with the 6al, and blaster 3 coil... Thanks.

the first engine i bulit for my car i went all out with the msd and after all the work it didn't seem to make a diffrence that much compared to the warmed over hei i had from high school.yea the rev limiters cool and all but how much do you really need that stuff on a street car?i could see if you had a stick and was concerned about missing a shift and causing engine damage or something like that.for my money this time around i'm not going that route.i want to go with a performace dist part but that huge cap in the back is what gets me,it big.msd has the digital six that gets rid of every thing normally seen on a car with all the usual msd parts but put under the cap.as i'm getting older and working on cars everyday still i'm learning that simplicty is king.yea the full msd treatment looks awesome when you pop the hood but until not to long ago if you needed that cap for your 85551 on sunday, you had to wait until monday at lunch to scramble to indy or pv to get it so you could make it to the mall show on wensday nite.it gets old after a while.i think i still have my pro billet somewhere,it'll make a nice paper weight someday.yea,i'm sure their are tons of guys that have had very good luck with msd and i don't doubt it for a minuate i just that for my budget street car it wasn't worth the time and money.maybe if i was running some from of power adder or something i'd have no choice,i'm not to sure.

For a street car I'd save the $$ & get a DUI #42720. You don't need an MSD.

That DUI looks interesting. The thing is its still 300 and almost as much as the msd. I already have the 6al box, I got it brand new from my work for 100 bucks so I figured it was worth taking. I also have the blaster 3 coil. Should I run the box on the stock distributor I have? or not use anything and get the DUI?

My brother has been running those DUI set ups in his dirt track cars for quite a while with great results. They fit the rules and with his "Keep It Simple" mind set they work perfect for him. He has come off the track and hit the tack recall to see as much as 7000rpm and never had a spark problem. I'd say that's the hot ticket IMO!!! 8)

that reminds me,i worked with a guy that had a 1990 lsc, with a blown 331 stroker and a 100 shot,he pulled the wheels all day on oe ford ingtion/dist system.it was a bear!it's all going to come down to what you want in the end.u got the box and coil for a deal so you're ahead of the game there, if you picked up the dist from msd it would still cost you less start to finish if you payed full price to start with all these parts.so,whichever path you take with this it will still cost you less to build the whole thing in the long run than if one of us did paying full price.

Still not sure if using the stock distributor with the box and coil is a good idea or not. Should I just run it stock and then toss the box on after and see if I notice anything?

yea,run the stocker, get all the bugs worked out(their will be)car dialed in and drive it for a while and then when the time and money comes around if you still want to try that out see if its whats cracked up to be.us what you have in hand now only to put money else where where it's needed.
