building a lowrod not a strip car. id like to put 20x10's in the back how much should i notch the frame 1/2" , 3/4" or even more?
how low are you going? what size tires? if you are going low i would say 3/4 with mini tubs to lay it down low, my opinion i would bag it , would look really sweet laying frame w/ 20's , but if you want to get really radical do a body drop so the rockers are on the floor , my cougar used to lay frame but i never got a chance to do the body drop.
You can notch up to the factory seam before needing to do a mini-tub. On my wagon, it was probably around an inch in the middle of the frame rail, but nearly close to 3 where the frame rail flares out.
well i just mini tubbed my 86" monte and have 20"X10" Bonspeeds going under her, and i narrowed the frame 3" on each side....but she's still not low enough, going to notch frame, it's bagged, won't lay out, but i didn't build it to lay out...here's a crappy pics.....

how did you go about narowing the frame? its roughly 2 1/2 " wide so did you move that section in bound 3"s or both move and narrow the frame?
whats the ofset on the rim?
Im building this car to lay out. i have Slam RE-8's for the rear 8" diameter so its gona get tight in there i'll have to get creative with the exhaust probably run it over the cross member. I got a custom 4" step notch cut out at work. just waiting till i finish my 9" so i can center it. a mini-tub is a given and a body drop is planned. one concern i have is the trunk hinge brackets. they are going to stop me from laying frame. any ideas, tips on relocating?

This is on a 79 Malibu w/a stock width 79 rear end. Mini-tubs are required & those trunk hinges will be in the way....especially w/a bodydrop. I also have less than .500 clearance inside/outside of the sidewalls.

well gett'n her to lay out is gonna be a challenge, especially with 20's, but i think i can be done....yes your trunk hinges are gonna be the crutch of the project, i clearance mine 1 1/2", and still had to make a relief for them in the tubs....i'm actually not happy with them i'm going to clearance them more(actually make my own hinge bars) and notch the frame, or think'n of relocating them to inside of the tubs and using compressed cylinder(like on new hoods and hatch's) to lift the turnk, but i'm still going racing, and never planned to build it to lay out, hence the reason i put 3" exhaust on it...lol...my wheels are 20"X10", with 6" of BS, running 295/40 rubber. rear end is narrowed 12bolt, with 2600# Stones over the axle...but i would say if you plann on laying out, you wouldn't have to narrow your frame 3", but you would have to weld your tubs directly to you quarters, i spotted mine to the seam in the middle of the factory wells.....i basically did the same thing Barry85SS did, i just narrowed the frame just in front of the #5 body mount, and just behind the #4 body mount, moved each side in 3" and rewelded her up....3" makes it REALLY tight!!! sorry not too many pics but i'll see what i can find....i dont' have a digital camera, so i had to lean on my buddies....but like i said biggest problem your gonna have is trunk hinges.....
perfect thanx thats exactly what i wanted to know. and exactly how i planned on doing mine. moving the frame in not just thinning it out. didnt realize id need 3"s a side for 20X10"'s. hope thoes 8" air springs will fit
well glad to help man, but like i said if you weld your tubs directly to your quarter, you probably won't need to narrow your frame 6", but if you plan on welding them to your outer part of the wheel well(where the pinch weld in the middle is) then your gonna need to narrow it more, cause there's no way you'll lay out with 20's, then it'll look wierd cause the wheels will set inside the pinch weld.......why are you using such a large bag in the rear? ya slam specialties are a damn good bag, but the back end of the car is pretty light, a person wouldn't need a real heavy bag out back.....hell i'm just running 2600# stones....

Even those 2600# stones mounted 1:1 (on top of the rear end) is going to be a bit much. They recommend a tapered sleeve bag for that mounting position because the dbl. convoluted bag will ride rough.
I would opt for the F9100: Tapered sleeve style; 6.5" dia; 2000# capacity; 5.25" min height; 15" max extension; 10.5" ride height; air fitting on the vertical section vs the top plate; upper & lower plates are designed to mount directly to GM coil spring bracketry.
The optional choice for going lower would be a F9002: 5" dia; 1500#; 4.5" min; 11" max; 8" ride height.
