fuel pump question?

what is the diffrece between small block mechanical fuel pumps and big block? can you use a big block one on a small block?

Eh......buh buh buh buh...... they are different. I'm not sure why. Bolt pattern, fulcrum arm. I don't remember. They are different is all I know. You won't see the same pump listed for a small block as you will for a big block.

The BODY of the pump might well be the same (most aftermarket pumps have the same basic body/pump design) but they don't bolt up to the block exactly the same. That's where the application differences usually are.

SBC & BBC Oil Pumps will interchange but, not Fuel Pumps.

Mechanical fuel pumps for a big block are different from the pumps for a small block. The big block pumps have a longer pump arm and they pump more volume than a stock small block fuel pump.

BBC pumps have taller pump gears with more teeth, too.

There diffrent dont try it fulcrum is diffrent. I have two new high volume pumps here one big and one small block I compared them. The way I see it if you use a big block pump an a sb you will screw some thing up. the bodys are the same though.

Years ago, making the mistaken assumption that they were both the same, I actually ran a big block fuel pump in my newly rebuilted 327. It ran for about 10-15 minutes, then died, The lever broke on the pump.

I know for a fact a sbc will work on bbc , but I don't know about vice versa. One hour from home early morning interstate that sbc fuel pump a friend of gave me a while ago was in the trunk. Well guess what put it on 396 in my chevelle drove home that hour with it on there and drove just like a bbc pump was on there. But I did change it when i got home.
