With an LS1, I am about 99 percent sure, you may want to ask on ls1tech.com to make sure, but I've seen people swap them back and forth no problems, as long as you don't put it behind a classic 350 or a lt1/lt4 engine, then it needs extra mods.
Yup. You really just need an adapter plate (and obvious crossmember/driveshaft/floorpan modifications) and you can bolt an LS-series T56 up to a Gen I/II using your existing bellhousing.
I believe the major things you'll come into interchangability issues with are the engine internals. External parts like brackets, oil pans, transmissions, etc. should be fine.
