What is the cheapest way to lower the back of my 79 Malibu? It has the stock spring in it still but I would like to lower it about 2 or 3 inches. I know people that have bought 1 inch lower springs and the car sat higher. I dont want that to happen to me.

You can cut coils from the top, but you should use something to keep the springs from coming off the perches. I got a set of Hotchkis 1902s (1" lower supposedly), and I think they dropped it more than 1".

Get stock rear springs from 68-72 Chevelle or Monte Carlo. Don't cut them put them in as is and it will lower the rear 2"-3" . That is what's installed on my car in my avitar pic with 26 X 11.50 -15 ET Streets.

Two questions.

1. Do you have any before/after pics?
2. Did you use regular coils or variable rate?

I was going to cut my springs (el camino), but if what you say will work, I'll just order a set for $70.

I dont have a before and after pic, but I have a little better pic of it from the side. As far as the springs mine are factory springs taken from a 71 Chevelle, and a 70 Monte Carlo. I tried them both same results. I am in the middle of a frame notch for 325/50 drag radials so I can't just get you a current pic, sorry!

This was when I first installed the springs and wheels/tires.

Tire size back then was 26 x 11.50-15 ET Street on a 15x8.5 w/5" b.s.... As far as the Chevelle weight question it's simple. Different wire diameter and spring rate on the older Chevelle spring. I've had them in a few Bu's and they work and ride great!

Sorry to hijack, but is that with a stock width rear? Chris
