No you don't but it makes it MUCH easier. It's difficult to clean the steel on the topside of the frame rail prior to welding, and it took months for my fingernail to grow back after the sawzall broke it in half
It would be much easier with the frame off. The hardest part with mine was reusing the piece I cut out so it would fit inbetween the frame like factory. Just lifting your body up a few inches in the back isn't to big of a deal.
hey little pro st what backspacing are you running? and any chance of a picture from the side of the car to see how far the wheel hangs out? I want to step up to a 15 x 10 and have been bouncing around different backspacing, thanks
I had a old buick rear 10-bolt 8.5 c-clip wich now has all moser set up in it and the rimis was a 15x10 with a 4-1/2 back space and was able to use 28x12.50 M/T et. streets. Then I put a Pro Star on it with a 5-1/2 back space and it was perfect. We had to drill a hole next to the other hole on the lower shock mount so we can move it over because the screw in the rim would hit. When I check for clearance I had a 1-1/2 space between the tire and frame rail so I put a 28x10.5w on it I has a little over a 1/2 inch room now so now Im gona notch it next.Oh and the car is a 1980 so I think you can put 12.50 tire on a 15x10 rim with a 5-1/2 rim anything biger or wider you would haft to notch or what ever you would want. This when I had the et. streets on it.
