why do my valves rattle I just put the cam and heasds on ? I adjusted the roller rockers to about 1/4 turn after they stopped making noise at idle. it was doing it a little uder a load going down the road. but now it,s worse. I,m thinking it's got too much timing in it the distributor has the really light springs in it so I think it is advancing too fast. but it also pops just a little at idle it,s not real noticeable to someone else but I can hear it out of the exhaust. It's a standard 350 block with a set of 58cc aluminum heads on it and I'm running 93 octane with a little octane booster in it so I don't think that is the problem. Please help me get my toy running right ](*,)

is it a new cam in there? if so did you use the break in fluid? if you didnt you may have worn your cam out, that has happened to me. what kind of lift are you running? do these heads have pressed in or screwed in studs? i assume its a hydraulic cam. are the springs the proper ones to match the cam?

you may have dropped a lifter on break in

yes it's a new cam it's a comp cams mutha thumpr. I used lucas break in additive and used rotella T oil on break in I got it running and kept it up to about 2000 rpm,s for 20 miniutes but I haven't wen't back and readjusted the roller rockers again though. It only does it when it has a load on it at about 1800 to 2000 rpm's for what it's worth it's got comp cams magnum roller rockers too. Let me guess If I cannot find it in the rocker aadjustment and maybe the springs in the dist. I need to tear it back down again. and just what do I need to look for. I did prime the lifters before the initial startup for about 30 miniutes too
But hey when it's just idling and i hit the gas it revvs great and sounds even better. I just like to sit beside it running that's almost good enough

take the coil wire off and valve covers, turn the motor over and see if all the rockers are moving the same or not. did you use quick bleed lifters? and even a simple exhaust leak can make it sound like a loose lifter.

It almost sounds like its pinging from detonation not a valve rattling from what he said. "Only does it with a load". Put some octane booster in the gas and see if it goes away lol.

If you're popping out the exhaust, you can't be too advanced. You'd sneeze out the carb. In any event, try backing timing out of it & drive it again. If it still "rattles", it's not timing. After that I really can't point you in any other direction without more clues.
