Does anyone know the stock ride height of a typical G body? My 81 El Camino with S-10 front springs measures 26 inches from the floor to the front fender lip directly over the center of the wheel. This is with 235/60-15 tires.
Steering boxes, lock to lock is just under 3 turns. Is this a stock steering box for an 81 El Camino? The steering also feels a little overboosted for my tastes. I assume if a past owner swapped in a SS box the steering would have more feel? Or am I just used to newer vehicle steering feel? Thanks

As far as ride height, everyones will be different according to tire size, rims, front end weight, etc. I'm betting that the steering box in the car is the original, the quick ratio boxes are about 2 1/2 turns lock to lock. As far as being easy to turn the wheel, Yeah they pretty much are all over boosted and with a high ratio, about 16:1 or so, they feel very light. That's just the way they were made. That's why many of choose to go to the quick ratio box.

Ok,so I found a Monte SS box.Of course the painted code letters are gone so I just have to believe it is what it is.

If you can still get to the car check the rpo codes on the sticker on the bottom side of the trunk, should have f41 listed for heavy duty suspension/handling, that'll be the quicker box. Make sure to grab the pitman arm also. Ithink they're the same, but easier if you have it than if you dont. See ya!
