I have an A body 12 bolt rearend with a spool and 4.56 gears in my Malibu that I bought from a buddy a while back. The other day after installing new u joints I noticed I could turn the yoke in the rearend about maybe an 1/8th of a turn either way before the wheels would actually turn. Is this too much slop. This is the first spooled rearend I have owned so I don't know if this is normal or not. My buddy had the cover off the rearend when I bought it and said everything looked good on the inside. However after I bought it I did have to replace the pinion seal because it was leaking. Do you guys think its safe to race or should I take it in for a rebuild.

imo...i'd check everything over real quick. doesn't take much effort to pull the cover, check backlash and wear pattern. better safe than sorry. it'll cost you a gasket and fluid if all is well.
