Hey I have a 86 Bonniville with a 305 and 200R4 Trans and when I bought it the speedometer wasnt working and now I need to fix it for it to pass inspection legally which ran out last month. Anyway The lower end of the speedo cable was binded up and not working so I replaced the whole cable and tested it and it spinns the gauge and it, so I put it back in the trans and its not working from the trans end. I now have the boddom of the trans appart and looking at the gears in the speedo drive and nothings broke or missing teeth and the only thing I can find is a part in a manual I have for all 86 Pontiacs that says its a Transmisson Governor and thats bolted into the trans and when appart theres a bushing that seems loose but has no real signs of abnormal wear and was wondering if any transmission guys have delt with this before.

The speedo drive gear is on top of the governor.it has like 6 bolts that hold it in. the gear could be worn or stripped if the cable went bad.

I would try replacing the plastic gear that the cable goes into.

It may be worn out where the cable slide into it.

Turna's probably correct. The hole in the end of the Driven Gear is probably stripped where the Cable fits. If not the Drive gear on the Governor may be damaged, Trans Output Shaft drives the smaller gear portion of Drive gear, Large portion drives the Driven gear.

Ahh yes pictures. If I knew how to post pictures I could show what the problem is better. Thats what Im working with and have out of the boddom of the trans now. I traced everything from the gage back to the gear that the cable gos into that Turna is talking about and everythings good. With the trans appart and everything out of the trans thats pictured by SSedan64, I tested whats pictured in the bottom picture by having the whole thing out and connected to the speedo cable and turning the gear while looking at the gage and the needle moves and I pulled the cable out of the back I the gague and reverse tested it and it spins the gear so I know everything from the gage down the gear works. An the gear teeth itself shows no signs of wear or missing teeth. Now with the picture on the top I have that out of the car too and its a two piece part being the alum. base and the governer itself and theres no signs of missing teeth on the plastic governer teeth or any wear at all to it or the metal teeth on the trans spline itself. The only thing I can find is that theres a bushing in the alum base that the governer gos into and when the Governer is in the alum base its a little lose and moves around a bit but after searching all over the internet I cant find anything else about this part other then breakdown pictures of the governer. I cant find out anything about a tollerance for the bushing to see if thats normal or if its bad and the governer is bouncing around not meshing up with the teeth on the Transmission spline causing it not to function right an spin the gage in the dash. The only thing I have left is to go to a GM car dealership and try to order that part if it still exist and try that. Im more of a Metal worker and body guy and dont do alot with transmissions and was just wondering if thats a common problem or anything anyone else has run into.

I don't know what the Bushing to Shaft clearance Spec is in the Gov Cover but, I wouldn't think it should be more than a .005". Try & find a used Cover at a local Trans Shop for cheap would be your easiest option. If you can't find one local, check with Chris @CKPerformance or Lonnie @ExtremeAutomatics.
It's not a real common problem but, it does happen.
