I have run a mini spool in a 7.5 on the street with stock axles. I also run skinny tires (most of the time) and don't make a lot of three point turns. Without c clip eliminators I know I'm taking a bit of a chance. However since my engine is making minimal power (305 w/ 200k plus miles on it) and I don't thrash on it very often, I don't worry. But that's me.

i have a 7.5 with a mini spool and 1 stock axle....the other one broke the last time i went to the track! i would suggest upgrading to some bigger and stronger axles if you plan to run a spool on the street. i don't think there's anything wrong with the spool on the street though. i'm debating right now whether i'm going with a spool or detroit locker in the new rear end.

Well the 8.5 rear is stronger and has more splines on the axles IIRC. 7.5 is 26 splines with a rather skinny pinion gear shaft. The reason I run a 7.5 is strictly financial. It's what I have and I have negative cash so it is what I run. With the factory drum brakes. And the crummy wheel cylinder/backing plate combo.
monzaz (and others) on this board can give you viritually any answer with regards to sizes, availability, and pros and cons.

Your point being? You ever had a car with a spool?
NO. I have driving a few cars one with a spool and one with welded spider gears and with steet tires i could see how it scuffed up the tires. He asked for a pinions and i gave him mine !

Ok so what i think im gonna do is get rid of the stock 7.5 rear end and just build a 8.5 or 9in. ya'll got me scared to miss with the 7.5in. I can see myself breakin in a intersection in front of sconic!!!lol  SO IF ANYONE IN TEXAS HAS ONE (8.5 or 9in) LET ME KNOW!!!!:)

What kind of power levels are you looking at here? What size rear tires will it see on the road, and what size at the track? Full slicks? Or drag radials? Auto or standard? aotu - what size stall? standard, what RPM do you launch at?

NO.Take a toy car that has a solid axle and turn it in a circle .Note that the outside tire is turning alot faster then the intside tire .A spool on the street will eat tires and break axles.

You could also go with a 12 bolt, the 8.5 and 9 inch aren't the only rears out there. It all depends on your preference. If it were me I'd go with a 12 bolt with a good posi / locker in it, which is what I have, but that's me. It's your car you can put whatever you want under it. :)
