it's just a matter of time before it breaks. Back in the day I had around 400hp always breaking spider gears in non-posi rear, finally welded the spiders and ended up breaking an axle at the track. Last week my buddy snapped his pinion in his 80's Firebird with a LS1 dropping his driveshaft at the end of his run. All on street tires.

Do it once - do it right. Off the 7.5 while you can still get something for it. Greendragginbu has got one you won't break.

A junkyard...

Even with only 20k miles it still wouldn't be worth the effort to install behind my LS6. Heck, it's not worth putting behind a GM crate 350...

350-375+hp 350, 4-speed Saginaw. I've put maybe 2000-3000 miles on the car with the 4-speed, another 3000 at least when it had a Saginaw 3-speed. Haven't broken it yet and while I haven't babied it, I haven't shocked it too hard either. I will be putting new axle seals on and checking tbe axles while it's apart. I have a 2.73 (current is a 2.29... don't knock it, it works with my setup ;)) so if the axles look bad I have a spare set.

http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/transmissions-drivetrain/397601-bullet-proof-10-bolt.html

This is what this guy did to strengthen his 7.5" 10 bolt from the link above:
• 28 spline 2 series open carrier with a Powertracs Locker
• 7.625” 2.73 gears (numerical lower gears have a larger contact area between the ring and pinion gears)
• Welded axle tubes to housing
• Diff Cover with main cap supports
• 28 spline axles
• Solid pinion spacer (eliminates crush sleeve)
• Extra bracing from the diff cover to the ends of the axle tubes (triangulation)

For drag racing, the 2.73 gears are undesirable, but the mods will strengthen a 7.5" 10 bolt. Is it bulletproof? No.
