Re: NEW Project 1978 Malibu LQ9/4L65 Swap Updated 4-14-2011
I prefer the band style clamps personally, leaves less to catch on stuff, but those are likely more secure.
I thought about what I needed to do to mine to get it road worthy...
Repair a few frame parts
Paint frame
Clean suspension parts
Swap in new rearend bushings
Swap drivetrain/suspension from the '81
Plumb fuel lines/brake lines
Install fuel tank
Put the body back on
Cut a hole in the floor for...
I had some minor, occasional backfiring on the 305 in the '81, turned out #1 intake lobe was slightly scrubbed. I drove it like that for the next year or so though, it never went flat and I never had to adjust it. On a side note I also managed to even knock down 21mpg with that thing :shock...
I seem to recall something about the sun shell (right term? I'm not huge on transmissions either)? I'll be looking into some of these upgrades myself for mine in the future. Right now it's living ok behind the 383 and normal driving + a little spirited driving (taking it easy when it shifts)...
I thought about what I'll do (if anything) when I head up at the beginning of May. I really need to get the frame ready for the body, and to get it down here I'm thinking I'll just order a coil of fuel line and bend/mount it myself instead of a prebent set, possibly the same with the brake lines.
If the radio won't control it anymore, do a temporary fix and tie it to the ignition-controlled 12v. The antenna will come up any time the key is on, but at least it will come up.
...and typically not on the street either :) I think a T10 will be just fine behind whatever you build. Judging from anything I usually read from you DK , you're not especially abusive on parts... that trans should have no problem holding up to your driving habits :)
Well so far my 2.29 stock 7.5 has lasted 2 summers behind a Saginaw which has gearing very similar to the T10 you're looking at. Believe it or not you should be fine with 4th around town. The RPM range on the cam in the 350 I have in the Malibu is 1800-5600, which besides the 1405 Edelbrock &...
I'm glad I've read as much as I have about the poly bushings, now I plan on either going with rubber or Del-A-Lum when I actually do a rebuild of the front arms (or get new ones).
