Forgot to say the method I try to stick to. I usually start with the tire height, and depending on the trans I usually try to aim for 1700-2000rpm at 70mph, a little higher if it's a 6-speed.

'87-'95 heads are like this, the ports are the same shape/size as the older heads though. Vortecs are taller and my understanding is standard ports require too much cutting to get them to match a Vortec head.

I think you'll be happier with Vortecs imo. You can get a set of used Vortecs for the same price or less from a salvage yard (a quick search on Car-Part.com says about $125 per head), and have them double checked at a machine shop for not too much (mine are 906, had no problems).
