Any LS will be better than what came stock in the G-Body. There isn't much difference between a 4.8 and an LS3 as far as bolting it in, it's more the reluctor wheel and the electronics... accessory drive and head/intake setup is up to you.

There are several rear disc swaps that've been done with factory parts, you don't have to use the entire rear assembly.

That's what I'm scared of happening :lol: Right now in 1st gear it just spins at anything over half throttle, and in 2nd it starts to spin when it gets up into the powerband.

The cluster and reverse idler in my 4-speed have a couple chipped teeth... it makes a rattling type noise in everything but 1st but otherwise works fine.
