I think my 1070 nova has a 8.2 rear in it. im not sure. It came factory with a 6 cylinder. Anyways will 8.5 stuff work it in? I know the cover is the same. Also what spline axels does it have i was told 28 but im clueless

some one else asked the ? a couple of months ago and if I recall they said that 8.5 will not fit due to not enough room in the carrier for the gear(different size) and I think the 8.2 has 26 spline and the 8.5 28 spline. Some else will answer this that know 100% but I'm tring to sound smarter than I am :)

NO the 8.2 guts will not fit in a 8.5 or the other way around but you can find a Nova newer then yours with the 8.5 and change the complete rear end.

The 8.2" does not interchange with the 8.5". It's also only marginally stronger than the 7.5", so it's kind of waste to get one.

the reason they won't intercgange is largely the pinion gears. the 8.5 uses a pinion gear that has a shaft the size of a 12 bolt. A little fyi though. if you can find an 8.5 out of a camaro that has 28 spline axles you can narrow that housing and use the axle shafts out of your 8.2.

get a 12 bolt or 9 inch, you'll be much happier in the long run

Get an 8.5 you'll be waaaaaaaaaaay happier. They are out there '70-74 Nova and clones, plentiful. Plus, and a big plus, the posi carriers and gears from then to current 1/2 ton pick ups and suburbans will fit. Almost all are 3.42, 3.73s with lots of posi's in junkyards!!!!!

Plus, a 12 bolt is only a little larger, and a lot more out of date and expensive, plus, truck 12 is not the same as passenger car 12 bolts.

And!!!!!
GM rearends take WAY lesss horsepower to turn than a 9 inch, like 25.....

the housing on mine is completly round and doesnt have any tabs on it like on the bottom of an 8.5. The first pics is a 8.2 from a pontiac so the cover is different but if you look at the bottom of the housing there is no tabs like on the 8.5. You can use a 8.5 diff cover on a chevy 8.2. Hope it helps im not an expert but i think i got everything right
